A President, A Dictator and A Pope

From Bob:
A President’s passing, a Dictator’s Sentence, A Pope’s Warning......
NEWS:
Former U.S. President Gerald R. Ford has died at the age of 93. Ford replaced Richard Nixon as President after Nixon disgraced himself during the Watergate coverup. He was originally elected to Congress as a Republican from Michigan in 1948. From 1965 to 1973, he was House minority leader.
VIEWS:
Ford was just what the U.S. need at a time of the national disgrace caused by Nixon’’s attempted coverup and other shenanigans. He brought back some semblance of stability, and, in this writer’’s opinion, conducted himself admirably, except for pardoning Nixon.
From Theresa:
I agree, now. Though, at the time, like many, many people, I was appalled at the Nixon pardon. The web of lies by so many to us, warranted, we thought, a public shaming.
Now, looking back, even remembering the shocking suddenness of the pardon, I think it was the right thing to do.
Gerald Ford seemed a good man; rather uncoordianted (is it just my memory that he hit people with his golf balls, as well as stumbling off planes?). But, he paid politically for his predecessors: the Nixon pardon, the final closing of the Vietnam War, inflation spiraling out of control...From Bob:
NEWS:
In a letter said to have been written shortly after he was sentenced to death in November,
Saddam Hussein said his death would make him a true martyr. "I sacrifice myself. If God wills it, he will place me among the true men and martyrs," the former leader wrote in the letter,
The former leader could be hanged on any day over the next four weeks, after the final appeal against his execution failed.
VIEWS:
What a noble “sacrifice” he is willing to make (said he with tongue in cheek) although the reality of the matter is he only willing to “sacrifice” himself after being condemned to death through trial.. Although, I am afraid he may be right about being thought of as a ““martyr.”” It is my opinion that he should go down in history as one of the world’’s truly evil leaders along with Adolph Hitler, not a martyr. Finally, he certainly has an overrated estimation of himself as a human being.
NEWS:
The Vatican wrote a letter last week to Paraguay Presidential hopeful Fernando Lugo, former Bishop, warning him of possible sanctions
Partial text of the letter, dated December 20, 2006, one day before Mr Lugo presented his resignation as Bishop of the Catholic Church and made public December 27 states: "The Holy See has learned with surprise that some political parties have the intention of presenting him as candidate in the coming presidential election in Paraguay.””
Mr Lugo said on Monday he hoped to lead an alliance against President Nicanor Duarte and had left the priesthood and further stated ““The Pope "can either accept my decision or punish me. But I am in politics already,"
Known for his work among the poor, Mr Lugo is the leader in the opinion polls.
VIEWS:
I am not a Catholic. If Mr Lugo feels in his heart that he can do more for the people of Paraguay as their president than as their Bishop, then, I think, more power to him.
NEWS:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard has made a surprise visit to his country's troops in Iraq. He took part in a dawn ceremony at Baghdad airport, marking Anzac Day, when Australia honors its war dead.
Initially Australia sent 2,000 troops to serve in Iraq, but over half of those have now been withdrawn. The Prime Minister said Australians serving in Iraq were "following in the footsteps of countless other Australians who have served the nation".
From Theresa:
How to express proper gratitude for this?
Wishing no one was there - but, they are.
And thank you to all those nations who lowered their flags in respect and remembrance of former President Gerald Ford. This kind sympathy is appreciated.
