A Sorry Killer and Paying For Protection

March 16th 2007 21:36
Welcome back to Today's World, and thank you Theresa for so ably filling in for me, and she with all those columns of her own to write. She is amazing!!!

I want to thank those readers who kept coming back even though I was unable to post any new blogs. I cooked my newer computer, and I am using a machine that is approximately 8 or 9 years old that I found in the garage. Talk about going back to no power steering, no power brakes and a stick shift, not to mention a whole 32 MB of RAM (using dial-up). But more on that later...

Now, onto my new column on this old, slow machine (but at least I'm back on-line):

Here's a Riddle for you: Answer at end of column:
What does a pig take for a backache?

WORLD NEWS:
Al-Queda Terrorist Is Sorry

The Pentagon released an edited transcript of a military in which Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (Number 3 in the al-queda chain of command) admitted involvement in the 911 attack which destroyed the World Trade Center's twin towers and resulted in many, many deaths of innocent people. He said "I was responsible for the 911 operations from A to Z."
He also admitted to involvement in the "shoe bomber" attempt where Richard Reid unsuccessfully attempted to blow up an airplane with a bomb in his shoe, the 1993 World Trade Center attack, the Bali nightclub bombing, checking out the Panama Canal for destruction - 29 operations in all.

The only apparent remorse Mohammed feels is his responsibility for killing children, saying: "I don't like to kill people. I feel very sorry they been killed kids in 911(sic)."

MY VIEWS:
Remorse??? Doesn't "like to kill people." Sorry for the kids he killed??? I don't think so - after all he did continue with his terrorism after the 911 attack, and did he think no one was doing to be killed through his horrific actions? attacks.
Chiquita Banana Is Here To Pay

WORLD NEWS:
The Chiquita Banana (ana - never know when to stop when spelling that word) admitted paying terrorists - right wingers "United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia" and the leftist "Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) ("AUC and FARC respectively [Spanish initials]) for protection (about $1.7million) between 1997 and 2004 in Columbia and agreed to a $25 million fine.

The AUC (cocaine exports and responsible for some of the worst massacres in Columbia's civil conflict) was designated a "right wing militia terrorist organization by the U.S. government in September 2001. There have been vicious fights begun by far-right paramilitaries and leftist rebels to control Columbia's banana growing region with most victims being innocents.

A good number of companies operating in the area have extensive security operations to protect their employees.

Chiquita made the payments to the terrorists to protect its employees from acts of terrorism. The kidnapping rate in Columbia is among the highest in the world.
Fernando Aguirre, Chiquita's chief executive stated: "The payments made by the company were always motivated by our good faith concern for the safety of our employees."

MY VIEWS:
Payments for "protection"? Sounds like the Columbia terrorists have taken a page out of Al Capone's book.

It's just too bad that the world has terrorists; as Rodney King said "Can't we just get along together."

Remember Chiquita's ads on TV - "I'm Chiquita Banana, and I'm here to say..." Seems like now it should be "I'm Chiquita Banana and I'm here to pay."

FUNNY NEWS (onto the lighter side of things; tra la, tra la):

According to a sex toy company's supposed poll, 52 Percent Of Americans Have Posed Naked (52% for a still camera; 38% for digital cameras; 37% for a video camera; 19% for a drawing or painting; and 21% admit to having posed in the buff but wouldn't specify the situation involved.)

Not that I am what you would call a prude, but I haven't posed nude - probably because nobody has asked and I can understand that.

Here's a funny joke from my friend MaryAnn:

Jack came home drunk at 3:00 A.M. from the office Christmas party. He fell over the coffee table, breaking it; got sick on the hallway rug; and ran into the door suffering a black eye.
He woke up the next morning not remembering a thing from the previous night only to find a couple of aspirins with a glass of water on the night stand along with a single red rose in a vase. He wandered into the bathroom and looked at himself in the mirror only to find that he had a black eye.

Written in lipstick in the upper corner of the mirror were the words surrounded by little hearts "Honey, breakfast is ready for you in the kitchen, I left early to get groceries to make
you your favorite dinner tonight. I love you so very much darling! Love, Jillian"

Jack wanders downstairs to the kitchen to find his son Eric there eating. Jack asked his son what happened last night. Eric told him about the coffee table, the mess in the hall and the running into the door.

Jack says he doesn't understand why Jillian is being so good to him with the aspirin, the rose, and the note on the mirror with the hearts and all.

Eric says to him: "Dad, after you fell over the coffee table, threw up in the hall and ran into the door, Mom tried to take your clothes off so she could put you to bed, but you yelled at her "Leave me alone lady, I'm married."

Result of Jack's drunken evening:
Broken Coffee Table: $399
Hot Breakfast: $4.20
Two Aspirins: $.38
Saying the right thing, at the right time:
PRICELESS!!!

Back to my computer woes: Wow, did I fry my new (only 5 years old) computer; I run Windows XP on it, and I did something that brings up the message: "Windows cannot open; reinstall <Windows root> \system 32\hal.ddl." I cannot find the Windows XP disk that came with my computer; does anybody out there have any suggestions about what I can do short of taking my computer into the shop?

And while I am on the subject, I got stuck in the middle of installing AOL's "Active Virus Shield" when my machine froze up. Now (or at least before I did the above requiring the above installation of the Windows Root), no matter what I do to put the program back on, I am told that I have to "close the Active Virus Shield" already on my machine (this before crashing it).

I tried everything - "Add and Delete Programs" (even though the AVS program is listed, I am told that it cannot uninstall a program that is not installed), the Windows control program (that isn't the actual name of the program), etc., etc., all to no avail. I just cannot get rid of the Active Virus Shield that is (isn't) on my computer. I am afraid hours on AOL's live help haven't helped. Anybody out there with any suggestions? HELP - Please give me your suggestions by clicking on "Comments" below.

Answer to Riddle: "Oinkment"; well I think it's funny
