Holiday Hangover

From Theresa:
I'll try not to be obnoxiously cheerful here, in case you went to a holiday party last night.
But, if you're going tonight, here are some suggestions from those who imbibe (& no, I don't drink anymore - which is why this is the only time I'm cheerful....
1. Drink a lot of water after your night out. The alcohol has left you dehydrated. This hurts. Drink water.
2. Eat fatty food before you go the party. Worry about your diet and cholesterol in 2007. Fatty foods slow down (but do not stop entirely) the digestion of the alcohol. Even fatty milk, no 1% here, helps.
3.This sounds unusual but some experienced (darlin', take off that lampshade, it looks silly) folks swear that dark drinks hurt more the next day. Red wine instead of white, brandy instead of vodka, make you hurt more the next day.
4. Have a non-fizzy non-alcoholic drink between drinks. Just plain water (hydrate, hydrate!) helps. Fizzy drinks (carbonated) somehow help speed up the inebriation process, hurrying and multiplying the hangover. So, of course, if you want to get blotto quicker, avoid water and go straight to whiskey & coca-cola. But, sigh, tomorrow you pay....
5. The Vitamin C in orange juice (the next day - or the same day depnding upon your partying and wallet stamina), will help metabolize the alcohol in your system. Some folks have translated this to mean that a mimosa the next morning (orange juice and champagne, i.e., hair of the dog) is a blessing. Others say hair of the dog, poodle or great dane, merely postpones pain. Others say postponing pain is a blessing. Others, oh never mind.....
6.If you can the next day, eat some rather dry toast. Low blood sugar is making you wobbly and trembly. The dry toast will boost your blood sugar level and help - eventually.
7. Many folks say no to aspirin and ibuprofen, your liver is already trying to process toxic levels of alcohol. Paracetemol is, I am told, in sea sickness pills, which may help. Don't know. Painkillers sound reasonable to me, but then I loved Absolutely Fabulous and never understood why anyone thought it was unusual to try & duck painfull consequences.
8. Some folks swear by very hot/highly spiced mexican or thai food to burn out the alcohol, yet, they also recommend eating this while drinking a beer. Hmmmm.
9. For Heaven's sake, sleep if you can. Let your body do it's best to recuperate from so much fun.
Additional suggestions, I know I've left out milk thistle before drinking, etc., are welcome. We need to help each other here
And, have a good time!
