Boy Scout Found

March 21st 2007 19:37
Welcome to Todays World column: Hope you enjoy!!

Starting off with Good News:
Boy Scout Found

A 12 year old Boy Scout missing from a campsite since Saturday was found Tuesday in relatively good shape. It is reported that the boy was homesick, and that is why he wandered away from the campsite. - Truly good news and congratulations to all who participated in the search.

Iran Nuclear Program
World News:
Yesterday it was widely reported that Russia was going to clamp down on Iran's nuclear programs in that it would supply no more nuclear fuel to Iran's atomic plant unless Tehran suspends its uranium enrichment as demanded by the UN Security Council.
Today, it seems that is not what Russia is planning on doing. Now Russia's Sergey Lavrov denies the previous story and states that Russia will not support "excessive" sanctions even as the UN Security Council considers harsher sanctions and measures to push Teheran to freeze its nuclear program.
This writer's opinion: As stated previously: Nuclear weapons in the hand of radicals doesn't seem to be a good idea. I have been acquainted with many Islamics who were good, sensible people; but it seems to me that the people controlling the Iranian government are of radical ideas and don't really care what the rest of the world thinks. I think Iranian nuclear weapons are a dangerous and scary

Presidential News:
Prior to a Congressional House Committee authorizing Subpoena be issued for Karl Rove (Bush's political director), former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and others regarding the firings of eight U.S. Attorneys which, Democrats catorgorize as being politically motivated, President Bush emphatically said no such thing is going to happen. He is willing to have the relevant personnel give statements, but not under oath. Originally, embattled U.S. Attorney General Gonzales asserted that the firings were "performance related" rather than being based on political considerations.
Alberto Gonzales

However, emails between the Justice Department and the White House released earlier this month contradicted Gonzales' assertion led Gonzalez to issue a public apology over the handling of the matter. The e-mails showed that Rove, as early as Jan. 6, 2005, questioned whether the U.S. attorneys should all be replaced at the start of Bush's second term, and to some degree worked with former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and former Gonzales chief of staff Kyle Sampson to get some prosecutors dismissed.
The authorization from the House committee came a day after Bushs' declaration that Democrats MUST accept his offer to allow the officials to talk privately to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, but not under oath and not on the record.
Bush declared that he would "Absolutely" fight Democrats in court to protect his aides against congressional subpoenas? Senator Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. stated: ‘Testimony should be on the record and under oath. That's the formula for true accountability" and hoped that the Congress would not get "Confrontational" over the issue.
The White House decried any attempts by Democrats to engage in "partisan fishing expedition" aimed at honorable public servants."
If neither side backs off, the dispute could end up in the Supreme Court and take years to decide ultimately, which may be advantageous to the Administration, but detrimental to the Legislative branch, to say nothing about John Q. Citizen.
Bush defended his Attorney General against Congressional Democrats and a spattering of Republicans calling for Gonzales' resignation. "He's got support with me. I support the attorney general" Bush stated.
However, the Senate on Tuesday voted 94-2 to strip Gonzales of his authority to fill U.S. attorney vacancies without Senate confirmation.. Democrats claim the firings of the eight U.S. Attorneys, some of whom were deeply involved in political corruption investigations were a purge after Gonzales was given new authority under the USA Patriot Act.
The FBI has been found to have, and has admitted, that they violated the terms of the Patriot Act; thus, further igniting the fire as regards Gonzales.
Bush has offered that his underlings may be "interviewed"on the President's terms only in private "without the need for an oath" and without a transcript. Bush further stated:
"If the Democrats truly do want to move forward and find the right information, they ought to accept what I proposed. ,If scoring political points is the desire, then the rejection of this reasonable proposal will really be evident for the American people to see."
Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., leading the Senate probe into the firings, dismissed the White House offer with the statement: "It's sort of giving us the opportunity to talk to them, but not giving us the opportunity to get to the bottom of what really happened here," Schumer said..
My views on the subject: (1) Why would the President of the United States disallow his staff to testify under oath unless there is something to hide? (2) The President said he hopes that Congress will not become "Confrontational" on the matter; I am of retirement age, and I cannot recall any former President as confrontational Mr. Bush. I believe he thrives on confrontation and speaks with fork tongue regarding the present matter; (3) In referring to a "Partisan Fishing" expedition, is the White House describing something similar to the Republican's impeachment party against then President Clinton.

News of a Lighter Vein:
A Pontiac, Michigan man, Christopher Johns was in front of the Court on drug possession charges and was presenting in his defense the fact that the only reason he was searched without a warrant was because the arresting officer contended that there was a bulge in Johns' jacket. It was Johns' position that such did not give the officer "reasonable cause" to search him and therefore was an unreasonable search and seizure.
Defendant Johns' argument totally fell apart when he offered his jacket to the Judge to see it for himself. The Judge discovered a packet of cocaine in the jacket and started laughing so hard he had to call a five-minute recess to get himself back together to proceed.
No report of the outcome, but one can probably easily guess. Funny stuff

Dateline San Francisco:
A man walked into a Bank of America branch in San Francisco and wrote on the back of a deposit slip "this iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag (sic)." While waiting in line to present his note to the teller, he got the feeling someone may have seen him write the note and got cold feet and left the bank.
He walked across the street to a Wells Fargo branch where he presented the note to a teller. The teller, sensing .the would-be robber wasn't the brightest bulb of the group, told him that she could not honor his note because it was written on a Bank of America rather than a Wells Fargo deposit slip, and he would either have to rewrite it on a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to the Bank of America.
The poor guy said he understood and headed back to the Bank of America; the Wells Fargo teller called the police who immediately arrested him waiting in line at the Bank of America.
Some guys just don't have what it takes to be a successful criminal, and this is a prime example.
