Christmas 2006

From Bob:

NEWS:
Pope Benedict XVI in his Christmas message talked of "many grave crises and conflicts" in the Middle East and of "hope that the way will be opened to a just and lasting peace".

He also condemned the conflicts in Darfur and other parts of Africa.

He contrasted scientific breakthroughs such as the internet and decoding of the human genome with what he called the "heart-rending cry" for help from those dying of hunger, thirst, disease and poverty.

VIEWS:

I am not Catholic; however, the above seems to be non-sectarian, if that’s the correct word, and I agree with each and every work. Merry Christmas and may the World be blessed with peace and the eradication of hunger and poverty.

NEWS:

The San Francisco Federal appeals court further reduced the damage verdict assessed against oil giant Exxon in the oil spill from the “Exxon Valdez” from $4.5bn (£2.3bn) to $2.5bn (£1.3bn), saying the previous decision had been excessive. This is the third time damages from the case have been reduced - the original damage award was $5 billion . The case started in 1994 is one of the longest running litigations in US history.

VIEWS:
I do remember that the shoreline, which was devastated with thousands, if not millions, of wildlife creatures being killed off, was brought back to its magnificence after much effort and money spent both by Exxon and private funds.

For you that saw the Kevin Costner movie “Waterworld” which I thought a lot of fun, take note that the main home base for the “Smoker’s” was the Exxon Valdez - it only showed this at the last minute before it sank thanks to the single-handed effort by Costner’s fish-like character.

From Theresa:
Well, family, you have finally worn me down. I always thought Waterworld was awful. Saw it recently and it's grown on me.

As to Exxon, gee what a surpise. Rich corporation spends many millions to reduce verdict so it won't be a legal precedent for damages the next time they recklessly screw up. Sorry to sound so sharp.

From Bob:

NEWS:

Scientists from Melbourne's Howard Florey Institute discovered a potential way to stop an alcoholic’s craving for alcohol . Blocking of the brain's orexin system can also prevent someone relapsing and interfere with eating disorders. Team members hope their work could lead to the development of drugs which could act as orexin blockers.
VIEWS:
Truly a boon to mankind if true. Alcoholism is one insidious disease which needs all the help that can be found to be destroyed or at least put in remission.

NEWS:
Australia isn’t the only place on earth suffering a drought. In a little reported drought in Afghanistan, children are dying from lack of food at an alarming rate. The U.N. reports that 1.9 million people are at risk and has appealed along with the Afghan government for $76 million for food aid. This with $millions being poured into the country for military purposes.
VIEWS:
What good is military achievement if there are no people left in the country. I say it’s time the world gets it’s priorities straight.

NEWS:
Flash floods from recent tsunami rains in northern Sumatra, Indonesia have killed at least 80 people with hundreds more missing.
VIEWS:
Golly, when it rains, it truly pours and when it doesn’t (Australia, Afghanistan, etc), it truly doesn’t. Doesn’t seem like there is any moderation in the world’s weather at all.

NEWS:
The "Godfather of Soul", James Brown (‘I Fell Good’), who influenced a generation of musicians, has died aged at age 73.
VIEWS:
You will be sorely missed James.

AGAIN, THANKS FOR READING, WE’LL BE BACK AND MERRY CHRISTMAS

From Theresa:

I echo Bob's sentiments. Merry Christmas and may your family be blessed. [/SIZE
