Gambling With Global Warming If You're 3 Sheets To The Wind

March 2nd 2007 22:56
NEWS -
GLOBAL WARMING
In his first address regarding “Global Warming” (the greenhouse effect), UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has warned that climate change poses as much of a danger to the world as war. He urged the United States (which produces one/quarter of the world’’s greenhouse gas emissions) to take a leading role in the fight against Global Warming.

Further, Mr. Ban stated: “The danger posed by war to all of humanity and to our planet is at least matched by the climate crisis and global warming.” and that future wars will result as an effect of Global Warming.
In speaking to schoolchildren at a UN conference in New York, he advocated a more coherent system of world-wide governance after the expiration of the “Kyoto Protocol” in 2012.

The “Kyoto Protocol” (to which the U.S. is not a signatory) was adopted at the third session of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan. This agreement was a commitment to reduce the agreeing parties emissions of carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases, or engage in emissions trading if they maintain or increase emissions of these gases.

The Kyoto Protocol now covers more than 160 countries globally and over 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

VIEWS:

Global Warming being viewed at least as large a danger as war to humanity and as a cause of future wars and conflicts. This is real serious stuff, folks; we all need to do everything
possible to reign in this holy terror. Think of your children, grandchildren, etc., etc.
NEWS:
CAN YOU SPELL "DEGENERATE GAMBLER/DEADBEAT?"

The casino co-owned by Tycoon James Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting, Ltd. obtained a $5M legal verdict against Syrian-born billionaire Fouad al-Zayat , aka “The Fat Man”, over a bounced $5,000,000 check.

The Syrian-born gambler's assets, including a Rolls Royce and Boeing 747 plane, were frozen as the London casino Aspinalls sought to recover on the judgment.
The High Court legal battle began when the aviation entrepreneur lost $5 million at blackjack in a single sitting on March 10, 2000. The check he wrote to cover the loss bounced after he placed a “stop-payment” on it.

Mr. al-Zayat’’s defense seems to have been that his requests for a replacement dealer were denied. Court papers revealed that al-Zayat has lost around $60,000,000.00 (that’’s $60 Million, folks) during his gambling at Aspinalls over the past 12 years. Mr. al-Zayat made the statement: "This is the only sin I have. I have lost a lot of money. I know it's wrong to lose money like this but if you have ever been to a casino you will understand what the atmosphere is like." Mr. al-Zayat has been known to tip a waitress $2,500 for bringing him tea at the table.

VIEWS:
Hmm...$60,000,000.00 sure seems like a lot of money to this writer; but to put it in perspective, if you are worth $1Billion, then $60 Million is the same as losing $6 if you are worth $100 (6% of your wealth), if my math is correct. Still...
CLICHE OF THE DAY: “THREE SHEETS TO THE WIND”

Meaning: Out of control

Example: He was so drunk that he was three sheets to the wind.

Origin: There are no ropes on boats or ships; they are called lines, and the lines that specifically control the sails are called ‘‘sheets.’’
Having three sheets to the wind means they are not connected properly (as to a winch) and are just flapping in the wind, consequently not controlling the sails, rendering the sailboat uncontrollable as regards the wind. The ship's lack of control is likened to that of a stumbling drunk, out of control and therefore, ‘‘three sheets to the wind.’’

Nothing in the gambling article about Mr. al-Zayat being three sheets to the wind.
Quotable:

We've got to pause and ask ourselves: How much clean air do we need ?" --Lee Iacocca
(For a usually pretty smart fellow, this is a pretty dumb statement). See article on Global Warming above.
