Christmas Around The World

December 21st 2006 18:59

From Bob:

NEWS:
Oregon: The body of Rescuers removed the body of 48-year-old Kelly James from inside a snow cave on 11, 239 foot Mt. Hood, and continued their hunt for the two climbers still missing now for more than a week. The three began their climb December 8; it being the 20th at this writing.

It is hoped that Brian Hall, 37, and Jerry "Nikko" Cooke, 36, are still alive, but the
searchers’ expectations are lessening each day. Searchers found a disposable camera in Kelly James’ pocket, developed the film and discovered that the three men were prepared for a quick climb up the mountain but were not prepared for a longer sustained situation.

On December 10, Mr. James called his family on his cell phone telling that the other two had
gone for help and that he was injured.

In 1976 three teenager survived for 13 days on Mount Hood after they became snowbound during an assent to the top. They survived but were much more prepared for a long outing than in the current situation.

The families remain “steadfast” in their faith said Hall's sister Angela.

VIEWS:
Our prayers are all with them and all fingers and toes are crossed.

From Theresa

This tragedy so soon after the death of the father who went out for help for his family after they had been stranded for a week in Oregon. Is there a way, somewhere a website or forum where people can list itineraries when traveling, and just check in at certain designated points
?
If folks don't check in, then the moderator alerts emergency personnel that people are missing?

NEWS:
Austria: A Viennese appeals court has released “UK historian” David Irving from jail two years early in his three year sentence for the ‘crime’ of denying the Holocaust ever took place. Irving will be released on probation.

Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Israel, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland are the countries of the earth that have laws against denying the Holocaust.

VIEWS: This writer has no doubts as to the happening of the Holocaust and is even more opinionated regarding the fact that the Nazi way of thinking and Hitler, himself, were amongst the most evil and sinister things ever upon this earth.
As to laws limiting one’s expression regarding anything (short of crying fire in a crowded theater), I will leave to the reader - if there be any.

From Theresa:
Well, you know how I feel about the creatures who deny that the Holocaust occurred. So, this is really tough. But, free speech isn't just for those with whom I agree.

This presumes, of course, that good people will stand up and speak out against the liars who try to demean the sacrifice of the victims of the Nazi's.

NEWS:

Australia: The Australian government, and in particular Peter Costello - the Australian Treasurer, has responded to US pop star Pink's campaign to boycott the country's wool. As an aside, Pink, of course of the “Stupid Girls,” is also campaigning against her real name “Alicia Moore” which she “hates”; but no more on that - just a stupid guy’s ramblings.

Pink has taken the oft stated stand that "mulesing", or cutting flesh from lambs' rear ends without anaesthetic, was "sadistic". Costello has retaliated by saying the practice stopped sheep dying of maggot infestations and was humane.

Australian actress Toni Collette and Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde have previously campaigned with Peta to end mulesing.

VIEWS:
Boy, it sure sounds like it would hurt like the dickens; I would guess that if I had the choice of dying or having flesh cut from my rear end without (but preferably with) anaesthetic, I would choose the latter unless, of course, I was in some sort of depression wherein I wanted to die - let’s hope none of us go there ever. Although “maggot infestations” would be definitely down on my list of means. Enough of this - bleagh.

NEWS:

US: - December 20, 2006 President George “W” Bush announced that it is his intention, as Commander and Chief of the US tribe, to increase the size of the military’s presence in Iraq in his long-term “War on Terrorism”
This in a bid to change the Bush defined situation of “not winning - not losing” at the present;.

VIEWS:
Can this war be won? That’s a tough one upon which all sort of opinions range and vary. We know it’s a terrible thing and hope for peace and goodwill, at least through the Christmas season.
And, by the way: Merry Christmas to all and to all a good nite!!!

From Theresa:

Bringing Back The Draft

How is the President going to increase troop size when there aren't any more troops? He is using the National Guard Reserves from states around the country. And when their tour is over, they don't get to leave. They are rotated back for another tour.

Meanwhile, the families of soldiers back home received an increase in their food stamp allowance. Thank you, Mr. President.

No one is talking about a draft. So, please enlighten me. How are there going to be more soldiers?

I used to tell my children that life is a marathon, not a sprint.

When Donald Rumsfeld said that once, at some press conference, I pulled my husband to the television and said”That’s mine. Not his. That’s my phrase!”

It was one of the few things I ever agreed with Mr. Rumsfeld about - that saying.

But, we were both wrong.

For too many young men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan and wherever else our nation is sending them, and will send them in 2007, life is not a marathon. It is too brief a sprint.

And, just because I can't end on that note during this Season, I'll remind folks that you can give food, for free, just by going to The Hunger Site It costs nothing but a moment's time. The sponsors just want you to see their ads while you click; they then pay for food for the hungry. Cool.

From Bob:

AGAIN, THANKS FOR READING, and, as Governor Arnold once said: “I’lll be back”
