Madonna, Electricity and China

January 16th 2007 17:52
NEWS:
On the David Letterman show Madonna has called for more adoptions from Africa despite the controversy surrounding her attempts at adopting a Malawian child. She said she was “saving a life” by taking in the one-year child.
VIEWS:
It seems to this writer that this is probably a good thing - at least one less starving child. I would think that an adopted child has every bit as much chance of receiving love as one’s own child and cannot understand while anyone would oppose such adoptions.
NEWS:
Terrorists have fired a rocket at the US embassy in the center of the Greek capital, Athens.

Greece's Public Order Minister Vyron Polydoras said it was "very likely" a domestic, left-wing radical group, “Revolutionary Struggle,” was behind the attack.

VIEWS:
Obviously not the result they wanted - death and destruction. We got lucky on this one; let’s hope that luck continues. Ties to al-Qaeda, or does that group not have a monopoly on terrorism?
NEWS:
In Baker, Montana they call it a “calling” contest - what it is, a hunt to see who can kill the most coyotes with a top prize of $6,000 funded by entry fees. Most states have few, if any, restrictions on the killing of the ‘‘critters” who do cause ranchers and farmers loss.
A backlash has arisen from animal rights groups and even some hunters, who contend the events trivialize the sport by turning it into a cash-fueled spectacle. This even while a debate rages between state and federal officials over whether the coyote’s high profile cousin, the gray wolf, should be removed from the endangered species list.
VIEWS:
It doesn’t seem like much of a sport to me. I can understand the problem facing the farmers and ranchers with the coyotes preying on livestock but am not sure how I feel calling such events “sports.” Seems a bit iffy to me.

NEWS:
Judge Raul Acosta of Buenos Aires, Argentina has ordered the arrest of former President Isabel Peron ( Maria Estela Martinez de Peron), wife of strongman Juan Peron (after the death of Eva) for questioning regarding a right-wing death squad exiting before she was ousted in a 1976 military coup.
There was no immediate reaction from Peron, who has lived in Spain since 1981. Her attorney, Altilio Neira, said he was waiting to see the final resolution of the judge's arrest order. He said he had not yet contacted Isabel Peron.
VIEWS:
Death squads? Sure sounds ominous. If I remember correctly, Juan himself was involved in such activities. Do not recall whether Eva was or not. I’’m going to see if I can’’t find some good news, if any is to be found. I’’ll bet I can.
NEWS OF THE GOOD KIND:
In Chaghcharan, Afghanistan Members of a Lithuanian-led Provincial Reconstruction Team participated in a two-day Disbandment of Illegal Armed Groups ceremony Wednesday and Thursday in Ghowr province with the province’s governor and police chief. Among the weapons turned in to the Afghan National Police by local residents were AK-47 assault rifles, RPG rocket launchers, and PPS submachine guns.
VIEW: What a great thing and in Afghanistan, of all places. Let’’s hope there is a lot more of this to come. Less guns (rocket launchers, etc.) = less deaths and terrorism

NEWS:
Two years after an agreement to end the long conflict in southern Sudan, workers are hard at work transforming Juba, a town of mud huts and dirt roads into what may soon be a 21st century international capital. Only six months ago the area had but 10 km paved road; but soon will have over 60 km. Electricity is being installed along with new water and sewage systems.
VIEW: Progress of a good kind. Electricity and all is only good.

NEWS
"I can see again," shouted a newspaper headline describing Cuba's new "Operation Miracle" which has restored sight to 100,000 patients from poor villages of Central and South America. The brainchild of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Cuban President Fidel Castro, this extraordinary humanitarian program offers free treatment and delivers successful eye operations. VIEW: Wow - Way to go Presidents Chavez and Castro.
NEWS
China, the Olympic host of 2008 “Summer Games” hopes that the games will help illustrate its coming out as a global player. That country is encouraging its citizens to make a good impression and mind their manners when the games start. One thing the government has requested of its citizens is try not to spit so much.
VIEW: If nothing else good comes out of China’s hosting the games, less spitting seems like a plus (of course we hope that more than that are the good results).

I TOLD YOU I COULD FIND SOME GOOD NEWS!
CLICHE OF THE DAY (a bit of a crude subject today) THE BIRD - GIVING SOMEONE THE BIRD
This universal expression of disapproval, also referred to as "the one-fingered salute" may have originated 600 years ago in France. The story is that in 1415, shortly before the battle of Agincourt, the French, anticipating a victory over the English, decided to cut the middle finger off all the prisoners so that in the future they wouldn't be able to shoot the powerful English longbow. As it happened, the English were victorious and mocked the French by waving their middle fingers, still attached to their hands of course. Calling it "The Bird" resulted as a reference to the feathers used to fletch the English (a bit crude, but, nonetheless, a lesson in history)
JOKE OF THE DAY:
A man goes to his bank manager and says "I'd like to start a small business, how do I go about it?" The bank manager leans back and clasps his hands together on his belly and replies "Buy a big one and wait"
MORE “MURPHY-LIKE LAWS”
If you can't understand it, it is intuitively obvious.
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. And scratch where it itches.
All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door, and, thanks to Roger Miller, “You can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd or change film with a kid on your back.”
The only perfect science is hind-sight.
THANKS AGAIN FOR VISITING AND PLEASE COME BACK NEXT TIME.
