NEWS:
Follow up regarding the stolen rocket launchers (see previous column):
A Sydney biker belonging to Australia’’s biggest outlaw bike gang, the ““Rebels””, is now suspected of being playing a part in the rocket launcher theft involving alleged Sydney arms dealer Taha Abdulrahman and his clients - one of whom is a terror suspect. .
It is believed that police are close to making a number of further arrests in connection with the illegal sale of the anti-tank weapons which police allege were intended to be used to attack targets including the American Express headquarters in Sydney and Australia’s only nuclear reactor, located at Lucas Heights. Apparently, police have recovered one of the launchers after cutting a deal with Sydney underworld figure Adnan ““Eddie”” Darwiche, who is serving a double life sentence for murder.
It seems that “Eddie’s” family, which was involved in a number of shootings in western Sydney had access to some of the rocket launchers. It has been revealed that the Darwiche family, which was caught up in a string of shootings in western Sydney stemming from a feud with the rival Razzak family, had access to some of the rocket launchers.
VIEWS:
Private arms dealers doesn’t seem like such a good idea to this writer; although, Heaven knows, there are plenty of them worldwide. Hmm, the plot certainly thickens in this upsetting theft.. In any case, one wonders exactly what kind of a deal could be made with an individual serving (not one, but two) life terms. Curious, what?
NEWS:
Somalia's interim President Abdullahi Yusuf flew into that country’’s capital Mogadishu in his first visit since the Islamists fled the advancing Ethiopian and interim government troops. There is still gunfire in the capital as two people died in an anti-Ethiopian protest. It is unclear to which faction the gunmen belonged.
Meanwhile, some Islamist leaders are in Yemen calling for talks, and Somalian’s new President and Prime Minister are involved in talks with clan elders regarding the government’s faltering disarmament plan. Lots of civilians carrying arms there.
VIEWS:
Let’s hope that Somalia and the rest of the world eliminate all terrorists. Probably too much to ask, but hope springs eternal.
NEWS:
Fourteen more survivors of the ferry boat, Senopati Nusantar, that sunk in Indonesia off Java (see previous story) have been rescued; this time from a life raft 500 km (310 mi) from where the ferry went down. Unfortunately, a fifteenth person died soon after the current survivors were rescued near Bali. More than 600 people were aboard the ferry when it went down.
VIEWS:
This more good news regarding this tragic boat sinking - last article reported other survivors rescued from oil platform. Let’s hope survivors keep showing up. That would be good news.
NEWS:
Apparently, Iran is experiencing a loss of population headed for better jobs abroad. Many students are preparing for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam given as a requirement for emigration in Australia and Canada among other countries. A travel agent is quoted as saying “The main point for going out of Iran is we have no job security here and there is economic tension.”
Numbers of those educated young Iranians trying to leave the country appears to have increased by about two and one-half times in the last year since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took office judging by the numbers taking the exam.
VIEWS:
To say nothing of the political tension and radical ways of the Iranian government.
NEWS:
Nancy Pelosi, the new San Francisco Democrat House Speaker (the first female in that position), is quoted as saying: “The American people and the Congress support" the troops that are currently in Iraq. We will not abandon them. But if the president wants to add to this mission, he is going to have to justify it. And this is new for him because up until now the Republican Congress has given him a blank check with no oversight, no standards, no conditions.”
VIEWS:
You go, girl. Of course the troops that are currently there will not be “abandoned”; that probably goes without saying, but well said anyway. More evidence that the romance between Bush and (the previously Republican controlled) Congress is over. A “blank check,” indeed. Now, maybe, the President is going to have to be somewhat more diplomatic in administering his doings.
Probably a good thing; although it may be hard for the “Texan Buckaroo” to change his colors and not to have his way in everything Congress needs to approve. Time will tell; but it looks that way.
CLICHE OF THE DAY:“Mind your P’’s and Q’’s”
In Olde England when customers started getting out of hand and unruly, the bartender would tell them to mind their “own pints and quarts”, the manner in which ales was and is still served. Through time it was shortened to p’s and q’s - “Mind your own p’s and q’s.”
JOKE OF THE DAY:
A dog applied for a job as a high-powered secretary with a multinational company. The
advertisement stated that the successful applicant must have good keyboard skills, a command of
shorthand, and be able to speak a second language. The interviewer sat the dog at the computer and watched in wonderment as the animal successfully carried out the most complex functions, including spreadsheets and e-mail. Then he gave the dog dictation and was impressed by the hound’s ability to write a hundred and twenty words a minute in immaculate shorthand.
"Well," he said at the end of the interview, "It looks as if the job's yours. There's just one thing. What about the second language?"
To which the dog replied: "MEOW!"
MORE OF MURPHY’’ LAWS:
Not guaranteed to actually be Murphy’s but very similar and fun.
The legibility of a copy is inversely proportional to its importance.
Re Thermodynamics (and stuff in general): Things get worse under pressure; and
Matter will be damaged in direct proportion to its value.
It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious; and finally for now
You cannot successfully determine beforehand which side of the bread to butter. (And the Corollary): The chance of the bread falling with the buttered side down is directly proportional to the cost of the carpet.
