Calling All Adults

December 14th 2006 20:12
NEWS AND VIEWS
From Bob:

News:
Australian Fires continue to rage on as a result of the worst drought in 100 years.
Views:
Again, keep praying to the rain gods for some relief, both for the drought and to put the fires out before the entire continent becomes ablaze!!

News:
HMAS Melville preparing to search for a BlackHawk helicopter that crashed off Fiji last month was berthed in Noumea, and a sailor from that vessel has been placed in a local prison arrested and charged with allegedly assaulting an elderly woman , which assault subsequently resulted in her death.

Views:
Not exactly the way to ease tensions and create good will, is it?

News:
Typhoon Utor has attacked the central Philippines, and at least 5 people are feared dead (2 confirmed). Winds of about 120 kilometres per hour are not uncommon with gusts of up to 150 kilometres per hour.
Views:
Fire infernos in Australia, especially heavy in Victoria; typhoons in the Philippines - it’s getting scary in that part of the world.

News:
Upon receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in lifting millions out of poverty by granting tiny loans to the poorest of the poor, especially women in rural Bangladesh, Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus has urged world leaders to get on with the fight against poverty and called on world leaders to stop spending money on wars like the one in Iraq.
"I believe that putting resources into improving the lives of the poor people is a better strategy than spending it on guns,"
Views:
While not a supporter of the “War in Iraq,” this writer fears that Mr. Yunus may not have his head completely out of the sand. I believe that, should the troops be immediately withdrawn from Iraq, the very agressive states of Syria and Iran will completely overrun Iraq. Maybe it’s pie in the sky thinking, but, maybe just maybe, mightn’t the situation been better had the US not deposed Saddam in the first place - maybe he was the “lesser of the two (or more) evils. I have no answers to the situation in Iraq - period.

From Theresa:
Folks in the US were lied to. Anyone who questioned the liars was called a traitor. There is so much corruption in Washington, it makes past scandals look like kindergarten, and now we are in college. The recent bi-partisan report about Mark Foley, finding that lots of people knew about this pedophile for years, and yet, the report suggests NO disciplinary action whatsoever, reeks of back room deals and trades on future votes.

Yesterday i saw a television talk show start the smear campaign against Hillary Clinton.

The question is when will US citizens stop eating pablum consisting of Britney's underwear and TomKat's wedding, and be adult. Vote and be responsible about healthcare, jobs, housing, energy. When will folks stop waiting for someone else to be responsible?

From Bob:
News:
Deep Fritz, the world's leading chess computer, has roundly beaten its
human counterpart, the current world chess champion, Russian Vladimir Kramnik, in a six game encounter in Germany. Deep Fritz won by four points to two after taking the last game in 47 moves in a battle lasting almost five hours.
Of the six games, Deep Fritz won two and four ended in draws. Kramnik, 31,
received $US500,000 for playing the mighty machine but could have earned double that sum if he had won. Kramnik, before the opening moves, acknowledged that Deep Fritz was "the clear favourite".
The chess software was updated after Kramnik held Fritz to an eight game draw back
in October 2002.
Views:
Why wasn’t Kramnik’s software updated also?

(Offbeat) News:
An American Airlines passenger lighting matches in flight to mask odours from her
flatulence (expelling gas for lack of a more polite term) caused the plane to land at Nashville, Tennesse (US) after passengers reported the smell of burnt matches; all of the plane’s passengers had to disembark, all the luggage had to be searched, a canine team was brought in, and about three hours were consumed in sorting out the situation,

Views:
Funny. Not the sort of security risk ever thought of, probably. Could you say the
plane was gassed up? (Sorry about that)
